Care & Advice for Mattresses & Divan sets.

Rule No 1.

Never buy a new mattress and put it onto an old spring base.

The reason is your base spring will have worn and by putting a new mattress (spring interior) on top this can buckle the weaker spring .The chances of the base spring and new mattress spring matching up together are so remote, it’s not going to happen. And if they were the same tension originally, one would have softened due to age.

Rule No 2.

Never put a new mattress onto a slatted base unless it is suitable.

The reason for this is clear – you really don’t want your new mattress dipping in any large gaps in between the slats. As a rule of thumb, the slats and gaps should be the same size  – approximately 2 ½ “ to 3” each ( 6.5cm – 7.5cm).The other thing you should check is that the frame is built solid and that there is nothing sharp that will damage your new mattress including the top corner edge of the slates as these edges can be sharp against the mattress fabric. Take extra care when turning& rotating the mattress.

Rule No 3.

Never put a new mattress onto a firm base before checking it first.

The reason for this is also very clear – you really don’t want your new mattress dipping into any holes and taking the wrong shape of a broken base. It’s unlikely that a firm base will break without you realising it, but it’s always best to check first to make sure. Normally a firm base lasts twice as long as a mattress. The mattress is the main cost of the bed, if you can re-use your base; you could save up to 25% of the bed cost, by buying the mattress only. However, it becomes a false economy if the base you are using is not up to the job.

Rule No 4.

Never put a new mattress on to the floor.

The reason for this is you will dramatically reduce the air flow around the mattress and therefore not allowing it to breathe. A mattress that cannot breathe is likely to get damp and then mouldy. This can cause respiratory problems.

Rule No 5.

Never roll or bend any mattress.

The reason for this is clear – you really don’t want to ruin your mattress by rolling or bending the mattress this will put extra pressure onto the tufts but in the wrong direction& in some cases may cause popping  – this is where the tuft disappears into the mattress leaving the tufting hole in plain sight.

Rule No 6.

Bedding in  – this goes hand in hand with turning your mattress.

From time to time a new bed may confuses its users. This is known in the bed industry as “new shoes old shoes” syndrome. The old shoes needed changing but nobody wants to change and the new shoes now need breaking in. Well follow the straight forward advice& instructions them your new mattress will fit & serve you well, for many years to come. Your new mattress should be turned from head to toe without folding / bending or rolling it what so ever (Rule No 5. Never roll or bend any mattress), it’s not easy – our mattresses are heavy. So we would suggest you get some extra help to do this. At the end of its first week turn your mattress over from one side onto its other side. Week Two – Rotate from head to toe. Week Three -turn your mattress over from one side onto its other side. Week Four –  Rotate from head to toe. Then after this we suggest you turn, then rotate one or the other once a month for the next year & so on if you want extra life span or extra comfort keep turning & rotating as often as wanted. The first four  4 times are very important – it lets the padding settle down. This stage in called settlement  or bedding in, this is where you & your new mattress are broken in together.

Rule No 7.

Never hoover or wash your mattress.

The reason for this this is if you wash your mattress you can degrade the FR in your mattress. Also if you hoover your mattress, you will help any unwanted friends to the surface to feed, maybe on you . Most unwanted friends burrow into the mattress after they feed then die trying to back climb up. If you hoover you’re just helping them. Just use a damp cloth to remove any dust. A quality mattress protector will work the best.

These tips should help you get the most out of your new mattress.
